The Orca Young Authors' Project
YOU HAVE A STORY TO TELL
The Young Authors’ Project is a volunteer based program that supports writing culture at Orca. We believe that every child has a story to tell. We are committed to honoring those stories by granting young authors an audience, supporting classroom work and celebrating student writing throughout the year.
The Young Authors’ Festival
The Orca Young Authors' Festival at is held each Spring to celebrate our own young authors and writing in general.
Highlights include:
• all-grade writing circles for sharing work -- joined by parents and adults from the community
• workshops throughout the day with children's authors, screenwriters, songwriters, poets and hip hop artists
• published authors sharing their work and talking about their processes
Some of the authors who have visited us in the past include: Nancy Rawles, Roger Fernandes, Art Dorros, Vicky Edmonds, Kofi Anang, and Hilary Hippely.

Scribbling Whale Café
Once a month John the librarian hosts the Scribbling Whale Café, where young authors from each classroom enjoy hot chocolate while they read, listen and share their work with an audience of peers.
Writing Champions
Writing Champions are volunteers who are trained to listen to, encourage, and honor the young author. Writing champions have been trained in the Lucy Calkins' Writer's Workshop method; a highly regarded model for teaching writing that emphasizes expository and personal narrative writing.
To volunteer or find out more about the Writing Champion program, contact Mary Elder at: maryselder@gmail.com
• Writing Champions (in the classroom)
Writing Champions support teachers during writing time and work directly with young authors.
• Writing Champions (Scribbling Whale Salon)
These Champions organize, host and promote informal writing blocks in the Orca library, providing Orca's young authors with time and support for their own creative writing.
Opening Lines
Every Friday morning we host intercom readings of student work (poetry or short creative prose), read by the author.
Weekly Bulletin
Every week we showcase the work of one young author in the school bulletin. Please email submissions to: hraykeil@comcast.net.
