We were perplexed today when while we were reviewing the names of the two bodies of water that are on either side of Saudi Arabia BEN suddenly raised his hand and proclaimed “Evan Duba!”

Mr. McCullough was perplexed. “Who?” asked Mr. McCullough.

“Evan Duba,” Ben again proclaimed. “Dubai?” asked Mr. McCullough.
“No, Evan Duba,” Ben insisted, giving the teacher (seemingly) the peace sign (two fingers).

It then occurred to Mr. McCullough that Ben was saying an approximation of “jeden, dwa” (pronounced “yeden, dva”) – Polish for “one, two”. (At times Mr. McCullough counts the students in Polish – and at other times in Spanish, Japanese, or French. Or English. And the kids count along and pick up the words. And use them!)

To the east and west of Saudi Arabia. Two bodies of water. Two of them. But expressed by Ben in Polish this time. Bardzo dobrze! (= Very nice!)

Today VIVIAN, ELLIOT, and EVA came up with an idea. They wanted to share a book ("I Am Invited to a Party") with the class. But they wanted to act it out as they read it. And they did. Very nicely. Their classmates enjoyed it very much!

FRIDAY
Today we will finish up our newest How-To Book, will have Library Class with John, will enjoy the rain, will sing our Continents Song, will practice "reading with expression", and will have fun.

CAN YOU HELP US on Many Cultures night (Thursday, March 25)?
We will need people to basically monitor our display/food area (which will be in the hallway outside our classroom). You may want to volunteer with a friend, relative, other class parent – to make it even more enjoyable.

A NEW DATE: MARCH 15 (Mon): All-school JOG-A-THON (Room 105 begins at 9:30.)

MARCH 17 (Wed): Class Pictures (and retakes) will be taken

MARCH 18 (Th): Mr. McCullough will be out for a medical appointment in the morning.

MARCH 24: Mr. Jim (our classroom volunteer)'s string combo will play music for us.

MARCH 25: Orca's all-school "Many Countries, One World" night

MAY 13: We will go to the SEATTLE CHILDREN'S THEATER again (on May 13 at 10:45). We already have the likely maximun number (I will confirm this in the spring) of chaperones per class that we can accomodate per trip. ARWEN'S stepdad, Sean; BEN's dad Geoff; and QUINNAN's mom, Karin, have volunteered to chaperone on this May outing. (They will need, however, to pay their own entrance fee; sorry!)See LINK BELOW for information on the performance we will see in May: "The Brementown Musicians".

On Thursday March 25 Orca will have its all-school "Many Countries, One World" night. As part of this celebration each class focuses upon a particular country. Our class is focusing

on SAUDI ARABIA.

Each class prepares some sort of food (preferably a food common to the country being studied) to share with others. The food is usually simply placed on a table out in the hall. Please think about something you might be able to make or buy for this event.

COULD YOU HELP US? You will enjoy it.

Earlier this year we began learning about and considering the lives of several people who faced difficulties in their lives as they tried to change our world for the better (e.g., Nicholas Copernicus, Harriet Nahanee, Martin Luther King). We thought about and discussed what they had in common.

We have since begun considering the lives of other persons of note. We have a few more to come, some human (e.g., Bill Gates) and some not (e.g. Koko the gorilla).

An attempt was made to include persons of various backgrounds.

We have covered persons from N. America, Europe, Asia – but have not yet covered anyone from S. America, Africa, Australia – but soon we will (Steve Irwin - Australia, Chico Mendez - Brazil, Philip Emeagwali - Nigeria).

LILY'S dad, Braden, came in to teach us some Arabic - and to tell us about Saudi Arabia. We later practiced writing some ARABIC numbers and letters.
