DAY 2 of School

Today we had a Room 105 FIRE DRILL.

The classroom DRINKING FOUNTAIN is now working again.

TWO-THREE SHEETS for parents are being sent home today. In your child's Homework Folder you will find: a form requesting your E-MAIL address (so that we can have a class e-mail tree set up); a form about your child (allergies, who can pick her/him up, etc.) for those families who have not yet completed and returned this form; a reminder sheet about this webpage.

TWENTY-FIVE

students (the same as yesterday) were in class today.

We learned "tatte kudasai" (stand up, please) and "suwatte kudasai" (sit down, please) in Japanese.

We had a visit from a TEAM A student and teacher. (Team A is the classroom, down the hall from us, for students who have special needs, many of whom use wheelchairs.) Three lucky students (Harmoney, Mamudou, Luisa) had a chance to go and visit Team A today. Others will get a chance on another day.

DAY 1 of School

We have successfully completed Day 1 of kindergarten.
Twenty-five students (out of 31) were here today.
We will see what tomorrow brings.

Asked about the first day, Luisa said: "It was really good fun taking a walk today."

Amina A, said: "I like the classroom because there's so much stuff - it looks fabulous."

Harmoney commented that the room "looks so pretty."
Maceo said that the teacher is "fun and nice."

Among the things we did today: practiced laughing, took a walk out on the playground; did some stretching exercises; met several teachers who dropped by; discussed "stranger danger"; drew self portraits; attended PE class; visited the library and librarian; learned how to request crackers (today's snack) in Japanese; got over nervousness; made friends.

Orientation Night Reflection

I just now returned home from the orientation night at school. I

met many of you, but there was not enough time to talk enough with all of you. Next week, if you can, please talk with me after class - I want to get to know you, your child, your ideas and thoughts.

I want you to be a part of our class. For the start of the year, however, it is important that the students and

I bond together and get to know each other. After the first couple weeks I will encourage you to drop by as often as you can. This is your classroom, too.

Very important: please let me know if your child has any special needs, concerns, interests, and so on. And if you ever have any sort of concern, please do nor hesitate to talk with me. I want to know your thoughts and feelings.; they are important to me.

Also, be assured, I will do everything I can to keep your child safe, included, and appreciated. And don't worry about the large class size - I will make it work!

EXPECTATIONS

Our overall class expectation is that we practice RESPECT (which encompasses considering the feelings of

others, being nice to others, helping others, including others in activities, letting everyone have a chance to express themself, listening with open ears, waiting for your turn, doing things in a safe manner, and so on).

Parents should read to/with their child - and do some sort of letter/word/number writing and reading EVERY DAY - even five minutes of focused work can be sufficient - but consistency is crucial. Please make this interaction enjoyable! Kids love to learn...but tired kids need to rest, sleepy kids need to sleep.

A parent of a student who was in my class a few years back, remembering how we focus a lot on the concept of

empathy
