TA McCann, father of Ray in 3rd grade, led the charge for ORCA kids all day Saturday, first working on retrofitting the play court and playground, with another group of parent volunteers. TA then completed building the 3 part composter for Orcan’s to help with managing our own clean green. The National Gardening Association/Organic Valley/Adopt a School Grant we received last year allowed us to buy the materials for the compost system and the outdoor classroom space as well as worm bins for several classrooms, and for the cafeteria. A tremendous goal would be to make our school more green, by dealing with our compostable/recyclable waste better. BUT, back to the work party--about 2pm, a little tired, but undaunted, TA began receiving new parent volunteers to finish up work on the outdoor sitting space/classroom for the kids, as well as progressing on the native plant nursery which John Koon and others moved over from the old ORCA. Although we didn’t make it over to the p patch to implement design changes which the kids from the Advanced Garden Elective suggested, we hope to do that sometime soon.
Parents who came and helped were Kim House, Patricia Kelley, Koichi Kitazumi, John Koon, and Dave Smith. Mika Kitazumi was our big kid helper, as well as Shira Berkelhammer and Telik Smith at the end.
If you weren't able to make it this time around, but wished you had, keep your ears out for the next work party where we'll be working on our ORCA K-8 P patch to make it more user friendly for the kids.
