October 1, 2007

Dear Families,

Exciting News: Our classwork assignments are graciously being uploaded to the Orca PTA website by a Kohl’s mother, Barbara. Hopefully this will help you help your student. You can always check and see how it is that they are progressing. Work should be in their binder- neatly organized into sections.

Now for a clarification. Most of the classwork should actually be getting finished during class. The only real homework should be:

  • Memorizing the Poem of the Week
  • Studying basic math facts/ fact triangles. Addition/ Subtraction/ Multiplication and Division.
  • Reading for 30 minutes a night!
  • Starting next week I will have 2-3 days of a home connection to our math work. Your student will get it once I have taught the content. It connects to our lessons. We will start the next math period looking at it.

Tuesday is the first day for student electives. For the next 9 weeks they will continue on Tuesday and Thursdays from 1:35-2:35.

Sometimes I wonder how we are to fit everything in and also try to create meaning out of all the components. I try to tie things to larger themes the larger themes of Global / Environmental Awareness as well as Social Justice. I really have been excited to see students bring in their understandings and questions about the world. Thank you for your support. Often, just keeping me posted about what is going on in your child’s life allows me to connect more closely to your child and therefore offer relevant connections to the classroom content.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Laura Grow
