Powerful Schools works with Rainier Valley schools to support arts, mentoring, after school classes, tutoring, and writing experiences.

The march will begin at 1:00pm and progress through the Hillman City neighborhood, returning to Orca around 1:30pm. After the march, the MLK program will be held in the school lunchroom. Classes will share what they’ve learned about Dr. King and his work. We will also have the opportunity to hear from Daryl Grigsby, who recently published a book, “In Their Footsteps, 366 Inspirational Reflections on Black History.” Daryl is a great example of someone “walking the talk,” just as Dr. King did when he was alive.
There are many ways families can support their child at this event:
• March with your child’s class. It is a tradition for parents to march with their children – and it helps keep students safe. The more parents the better!
• Enjoy the program and see how our Orca students have interpreted the messages of Dr. King (1:30 – 2:30).
• Help set-up or clean-up. We will begin decorating the stage in the morning when school begins, and set-up chairs in the lunchroom after lunch.
• Volunteer to help during the program.
Please contact Laurie Elder (325-9195) or Mary Williams (723-1514) if you can help with any specific task or just want to help set-up that day.
