Greetings Orca Families and Friends –

Can you believe the exciting day has arrived? Our new construction and building update is happening as we speak! With any new construction project, the question “Is the glass half full or half empty?” frames the attitude each of us chooses to take toward the Project. As routines are disrupted and problems and complications spontaneously surface, having an optimistic, solutions-oriented perspective is critical for each of us. Let’s all visualize and keep the “half full” glass perspective through the duration of our new construction project.

If you’re wondering why I’m reporting to you, having been through numerous construction projects in previous assignments, Ben has assigned me the task of being the “point person” for our Project. Subsequently, this will be the first of numerous logistical updates you will find here in our weekly bulletin. As our building point person, I am working closely with Sue Cromarty who works at the John Stanford Center. Two of Sue’s responsibilities are to work with the on-site Project superintendent and us. Look forward to Sue’s monthly updates of the
Project in our weekly bulletin. Sue and I have already had several in-depth conversations about safety and attempting to maintain a smooth operation of Orca.

Though we will all be impacted in some way, Phase I of our two-part construction project (construction of the greenhouse and garden on the northeast corner of the campus) will most impact our First Base Program headed by our beloved duo Melodie and Barbara. Let’s all remember to be extra supportive of them through the completion of the Project. Ben and I wish to publicly thank them in advance for their on-going flexibility and acknowledge their cooperation.

Day Lead Custodian Anita and I were invited to attend the kick-off meeting for the BTA (Building, Technology, and Academics) Project last Thursday. We learned the project was to begin sooner than expected. Effective Wednesday, January 30, 2008 you will find the main entrances to school (east entrances facing 46th Ave. S) NOT accessible through the duration of the new construction and remodeling project. Our temporary main entrance will be through the north doors on the 2nd level (near Stacy’s and Maidi’s classrooms) facing Dawson St. These doors will now remain open throughout the day.

The few off-street parking spaces near the main entrance will be available for use through Friday, February 15, 2008. At that time, the lot will be closed to all vehicles except delivery, construction, and special education busses through the duration of the Project.

If you have questions or concerns, please direct your comments to me and I will be in touch with Sue. You may contact me through a note, e-mail at dksakaue@seattleschools.org, or call my direct line at 206/252.6870. I will respond to your questions or concerns in the weekly bulletin or in as timely and informed manner as possible. In closing, on behalf of the children of Seattle Schools today and tomorrow, thank you to each of you for your support via the approval of the sale of bonds in one of our recent elections.
