This week, your child should be bringing home a login and password to access the Everyday Math web site – just in time for winter break! Once you have this information, go to www.everydaymathonline.com and use the student log-in box in the upper left corner of the page to access grade-specific games and curriculum reference materials with your child.
Game Idea: Mental math. Use this game at the dinner table, waiting in line for something, in the car, or anywhere! Tailor the level of difficulty to the ability of your children by stringing math problems together. For a 4th grader, you may say, “Start with 5. Double it. Subtract 9. Times 3. Divided by 6. Times 4. What’s the answer?” Over time, increase the speed and complexity. For younger children, use only addition and subtraction: “Start with 1. Add 4. Subtract 3. Minus 1. What’s the answer?”
Math Tip: Mix in math. The kitchen is filled with tasty opportunities to teach math. Double and divide cookie recipes, for example, to reinforce fractional measurements. Whip something up over winter break, and have fun!
