October 23, 2007

Dear Families,

Oops! I didn’t get the weekly letter written yesterday since we were in the field planting along the Green River meant I had no time. So, here it is! But first: an update. Your fabulous students planted 224 plants including about 125 grown by Orca students.

This week also is the Harvest Festival on Wednesday at 1:10. If you want to donate a snack for the class to share that would be fabulous. It is supposed to be a celebration of the Harvest Season.

We are starting our new literature books this week. We will be doing them for the next two weeks. The assignments will be for them to do a story map about their book. Find 10 words, look them up, with the page number and tell why they were important to the story. They also must write 5 discussion questions. And pick out 3 favorite passages in the book, write them and explain why they chose them.  This is all due on November 5, but there are incremental due dates so I can discuss the book with them.

Our electives resume again this week on Tuesday and Thursday. We have our buddy classroom on Wednesday afternoon & I wonder how we will fit everything in!? Last week it was wonderful to start our ecosystem explorations/ investigations by building terrariums and this week we will be building aquariums.

The poem for the week is by Robert Frost. I wil post it on the Orca PTA site when I get a moment.

Thanks for all of your support. I am starting to take sign-ups for conferences….remember this year Orca is on the regular schedule until the 19-21 when students have no class. I have posted a schedule by the door, however, if you want to write your 1, 2, 3 choice I will schedule you that way as well.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Ms. Grow
