December 3, 2007
Dear Families,
Welcome to December.
It feels nice to be back with the class after a great conference on educational issues.
I am inspired.
There is great work to be done both in the classroom and also in the political arena.
As I explained to the class, often what our schools look like is because of legislative issues so they need to make sure that they pay attention and let their representatives know what it is that they value in terms of education.
Today we began to do book talk presentations and this week we will be getting new literature books some of them are also Global Reading Challenge Books.
Wow!
So far the presentations have been fantastic.
They are creative, show comprehension, and are polished.
Classmates are asking thoughtful questions and giving sincere compliments.
In math we are studying parentheses and number sentences.
This is requiring students to sharpen their basic math facts.
It also shows that reading number sentences is of utmost importance.
Phrases in parentheses need to be solved first.
I will be handing out homework packets.
However, fifth graders can choose to instead do the comparable lessons in the fifth grade student journal.
Those are Lessons 7-4 & 7-5
pg. 219, 220,222, & 223.
I told them that if they want to bring them in each day to be checked so that they are not practicing wrong.
I definitely do not want them to be practicing wrong!!!
In Science we will continue to be doing studies of Ecosystems and what happens when pollutants are added.
We will look at last week’s findings that one of the main pollutants in Puget Sound comes from runoff and we will talk about how that means that we can live healthily in our communities.
We will begin to study the Declaration of Human Rights which the United Nations adopted December 10, 1948 and we will
prepare to see a play that has been developed by students and their teacher at
Rainier Beach High School on December 12.
Part of the play is about the Jeno 6 and our class has been asked to have a role in a protest scene.
Students from our class who want to will get to go on stage for that scene.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns about what is happening in class.
Sorry that I did not get last week’s poem posted to the web.
Sincerely,
Ms. Grow
