November 26, 2007

Dear Families,

FYI :  THE FAMILY DIRECTORY WENT HOME TODAY.

It was so lovely to get to meet with you over conferences.   For those two families I have not met with yet, I look forward to getting together in the next week or so.   It is so important to have us all working on the same page.

Just a heads up about the week and my schedule: I will be out on Wed- Friday and Ms. Williams will be the guest teacher.   I have an opportunity to represent Seattle at the National Council of Urban Educators and am greatly looking forward to working with others about issues affecting public education.     The students will be in good hands--many already know Ms. Williams.   I am excited that she is going to be bringing in some poetry for the students to explore.   Their time with Ms. Williams will also be a great chance to do a bit more multiplication practice & writing—things that the students enjoy and need to keep working on.

In terms of this week’s themes and topics.

  • In Math our work connects to Cairo, Egypt – measurement and learning to read charts for statistics.
  • Students will be doing reading around our science units and looking at how pollution made by humans effect ecosystems?

They will do small reports on pollutants as well as be learning about the Duwamish.   It is helpful that there has been a lot of info on it especially before a   big community meeting about the development of a South Park landfill: 7 p.m. Nov. 30, South Park Community Center, 8319 Eighth Ave.

·          Students will be working on writing/ and editing.

Homework is the math pages, reading every day at home for 20-30 minutes and starting to work on their Literature Book presentation.   IT is due Monday, December 3.

The poem of the week is Night Creature by Lillian Moore.

Thanks for all of your support.   Oh, exciting news for the next four weeks on Wednesday at 12:50-1:40 we will be having a scientific illustrator work with our classroom.   We will start on illustrating parts of the Native Forest ( in connection with our year long Native Plant program).   Also, ask your student about the class worms!

Sincerely,

Ms. Grow
